Plastic cameras such as the Diana, Holga, or Pinhole cameras, distort the light and the image in unexpected and often ‘arty’ ways. There is a resurgence of retro cameras such as the plastic camera as well as traditional film cameras with younger people who have only experienced digital cameras. If you know a bit about composition you can get some cool effects with these low-tech cameras. The 4th International Juried Plastic Camera show at the RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco – May 2011 – reveals a range of images and effects that are a direct result of the person behind the low-tech lens. Composition and content are the main issue for the photographer, the print effect is often a gift from the downscale equipment including: double and triple exposures, scratches, soft focus, vignetting (dark corners), light leaks and other exciting ‘mistakes’ that create a retro look. read & watch ARTICLE and SLIDESHOW
